While on our way back to the Adirondacks from Montana in July, 2000, Meg and I decided to check out some new country and visit Custer State Park, and Harney Peak, which is the highest point in South Dakota. We found the park was a varied landscape of grass prairie and buffalo, and some of the best mountain scenery in the Black Hills.

We spent an evening in the area, then did the hike up Harney Peak in the morning before moving on. It was enough time to give us an overview of the park, but not nearly enough time to become really acquainted with the landscape. On the way out of the Black Hills, we also stopped at the Crazy Horse Memorial, a really inspirational monument to the Native Americans - still under progress - but far beyond what we had seen when we stopped by a few years before.
