Fine Art Print Information

Today's digital photographic technology is amazing. It has eliminated the constraints of traditional darkroom techniques, and allows us to more fully recreate our artistic visions. Digital technology offers the best reproduction of the vibrancy of light found in the original scene and can be enlarged to large print sizes without loss of clarity, color, and detail.

Carl works with digital; darkroom technology to help produce a print with the best possible color tones and detail. With digital techniques, it is easier to duplicate the subtle tones in the highlights and detail in the shadows and work with the colors and saturation.

All of our fine art prints are produced using digital darkroom techniques. Each original transparency is first scanned to create a digital file. Then each file is cleaned and color corrected on a computer designed specifically for graphics work. This process may take anywhere from several hours to as many as 18 to 20 - or more - over a period of several days to a couple of weeks to make sure we are completely satisfied with the final rendering of an image. Images are then printed using either one of two different printing methods.

Special Edition Crystal Archive Prints

Fuji Crystal Archive prints are the finest quality photographic prints available. These are high-tech prints that are printed by Bokland Custom Visuals on a Cymbolic Lightjet430 printer using laser technology. They are the most stable photographic prints available today, having an archival life of at least 60 years under normal viewing conditions.

Each of these images are originally scanned with a high quality drum scanner. Carl then digitally masters each print on his graphics computer to exacting color standards. The final prints are custom produced on commercial equipment that uses colored lasers to expose the photographic paper. These prints exhibit superb color reproduction and exquisite detail with all the richness and luster found only in a fine art image on photographic paper. Being continuous tone, these prints show the smoothest transitions between color tones and also minimize any grain structure from the film.

Since digital prints can be reproduced in any size or quantity with the same quality, we have decided to produce Special Edition Archival Prints rather than limited editions. Each print from a specific transparency is signed, dated, and numbered in the order in which it is produced in each image series. Prints are shipped rolled in a tube.

Archival Ink Jet Prints

Archival inkjet printing has now evolved to a point where the quality rivals that of a continuous tone photographic print. Carl can produce stunning high quality murals up to 24 inches by 96 inches - or longer - in his studio on an archival ink jet printer. Most all of these images were scanned in his office on a 4000 dpi Nikon 8000 scanner at the highest scanning settings. Each photo was then digitally mastered on his graphics computer, and then printed on Premium Glossy paper with a 7 color Epson Stylus Pro 7600 and Ultrachrome inks to reproduce exquisite detail with superior photo-quality color reproduction.

These prints have an archival life of 75 years, which is better than that of the most archival photographic paper. With natural saturated colors, fine shadow detail, and soft color tones in the highlights, I find image reproduction is better than any prints I've ever had produced when using traditional enlarging methods. Prints are signed and shipped rolled.
